OK – I am not deliberately trying the break the law!
I insured my motorcycle from 1st April, rode it to the MOT station where it passed (I was told I was allowed to do this). I then was unable to tax it because the post office had closed and also because I still have not received my insurance papers.
Now I have tried online and it does not recognised the bike as having insurance. I am getting really angry with this – I am paying for insurance, want to tax it and can’t because the post-office is shut and the paperwork has not arrived yet.
If I just drive it on the road and explain my situation if/when stopped is this ok?
It was SORN for the winter and I am looking forward to getting it back out.
Phone your insurance, if you can’t tax online it’s their fault
As soon as it’s taxed online you can use straight away before tax disc arrives
If you ride with no tax police will fine you and give you points on licence even if you have tried to tax but can’t
not worth the risk as most police cars and a lot of traffic cameras have "Automatic Number Plate Recognition" and will send fine out automatically as soon as its spots you as they are linked to tax, MOT and insurance records so it tell if you are not covered

you have 2 weeks grace period generally – if you do get stopped by the police or flashed, you can explain due to an oversight on your part you have to wait until tues to tax the bike – explain you tried to do it online this week but it wasnt recognising the bike as insured – do you have your insurance docs yet? theres another excuse.
you gota take it to the post office to tax it anyway – chances are if you get caught this weekend you’ll be grand

What About The 14 Days Grace?
If your vehicle licence has expired there is an understanding that you may continue to use the vehicle for up to 14 days. However you must apply for a new licence within the 14 day period and licence it from the expiry date of the previous licence. If proof that a complete application has been received at DVA, before taking a vehicle on the road, you will not be penalised for driving without a current Vehicle Licence or for failing to display one.
The 14 days period of grace is a concession. In law a current licence must be displayed at all times when the vehicle is on the road. (licence in this case is your tax licence)

No it is not ok, i is still illegal. However if you got stopped, they would give you 7 days to produce your documents at given police station.
You should have had all the paperwork sorted by then.

I answered a similar question a couple of days ago – not sure if it was you.
Strictly speaking, you can’t ride without tax.
HOWEVER, if you’re stopped by the police for not having or displaying tax, they’ll simply report you to the DVLA. If you tax the bike at the earliest opportunity (probably Tuesday when your paperwork arrives or the insurance database is updated), by the time the DVLA gets the report, you’ll have tax & no further action will be taken.
Not having road tax isn’t a criminal offence, so you can’t be summonsed to court & you can’t be given points on your licence. The only penalty is to be charged back duty – in your case, you won’t owe any.
A couple of additions;
There is NO 14 day ‘grace’ period
You CAN’T have your vehicle clamped, crushed or towed for no tax unless you persistently refuse to pay & the DVLA have taken you to court over the matter.

If the online (DVLA) report says no insurance then any Police enquiry will come up with the same result as they share the same information. They aren’t very quick about updating their database as I’ve been stopped for no insurance on a car three months after I bought it. The insurance had been transferred from my old car to the new one on the date of purchase and fortunately I had the documentation. It’s frustrating but really it’s not worth taking the risk of riding without documentation and being stopped and getting all the hassle. These days the Police have the powers under Section 165 to sieze uninsured vehicles and that will cost you £100+ and £12 per day storage costs to get it back.

It’s an offence, one where they can and do take the bike off you. You won’t get points, but could be fined up to £2k…. There is NO grace period, UNLESS you have applied online, wherefore you have 5 days. That’s the facts, others will disagree. It’s your money/bike, you choose who’s right?

If your bike is SORNED
unless you’ve got a current reminder ( less than one month old and not usedd to sorn the bike) you can only get TAX VED at a post office or at the LVLO or at the DVLA
Nearest LVLO is READING oposite the big morrisons, or portsmouth ( don’t know where that one is)
If the bike is on a SORN and you ride it other than to the MOT station you risk getting a fine for breaking the statutory notice which is over £2,000 fine and risk getting the bike crushed.
You will need to go to the post office LVLO or send off to the DVLA your V5c Mot and insurance and produce in person, it will be back taxed til the beginning of the month, Unlucky for me it cost me the whole of March just to be able to ride a bike from the 26th…

NO! You will get done if caught! It’s then on your records! Don’t go there, be patient.

You need to chase up your insurance ASAP. While the database isn’t updated instantly, it should be up to date by now. It is possible that a wrong digit has been entered, and that could be big problems if stopped by roadside check.
It is still an offence to be without a valid disc displayed: the only grace is for 5 days after expiry provided you have applied on line while the old disc was still valid.
Until you get it all done you are still SORN, and if you get stopped they will have your guts for garters. (no tax, no insurance? + whatever they stop you for)

Hello
Sorry but no. You have driven it the only place you could without Road Tax. The bike had to be insured to take it to the MOT. And of course home again. Unfortunately you can not even park it on the Public Highway unless it is Insured, MOT’d and Taxed.
And to get the Tax you will need the V5, MOT and either a cover note or the insurance certificate.
No exceptions (You used to get 14 days grace but people knocked the Ar’e out of it, So it was stopped)
Another point is that it would flag up as both no Insurance or tax on the police automated systems.
