My question is this…
I want to get a motorbike so that I use my car less often (a bike is cheaper to run). Are there any companies (in England, UK) who offer car insurance for occasional use only (‘pay-per-use’ style??)?
I would like to commute to work each day on my motorbike and only use the car once a fortnight. This would be good for my pocket (what with the "credit crunch" effecting our lives) and also good for the environment (less fuel used).
Ideally, I would only use a motorbike, but really do have to keep the 4 wheeled alternative as I have my 2 daughters once a fortnight.
Could anyone please help me answer this question. It would be very much appreciated!! Any other suggestions you could offer would also be appreciated!
Thank you!
norwich union do a "pay as you go one" I looked into that.
BUT it’s for cars.. doubt they do it for bikes.. and you have to get something fitted to the car to keep a track of your mileage.
it has to be a certain age car though..
admiral was pretty good for my insurance this year though.

When you get an insurance quote, just tell them you only drive so many miles per year and as long as you stay under that limit, you should be able to pay a cheaper rate. Your insurance quote should be partially based on how many miles you drive per year and what the purpose is. At least that’s how it is in MO, USA

I am not sure about rules in the UK, but cannot imagine that they would be THAT different from the US… in the US, you can put your car on ‘pleasure’ use instead of ‘commute’ and most companies give a substantial discount for low usage (usually 7000 miles or less per year… approx 4300km).
Good luck!

it is not worth insuring a car for ‘time of use only’ as they car really needs to be insured against theft, fire etc even when not in use. most insurance companies will however be glad to offer limited mileage schemes. this amens you just pay for a car to use ‘UP TO’ a set miles very year. this works out relatively cheap and is why so many classic cars use it with say just a 300 miles per year limit. you can agree limit . try searching online first for this failing that a good broker should be able to accommodate you.

i use to collect mustangs. to afford the insurance i only had them covered during the summer months and they sat the rest of year. anything over fifteen years old was classified as classics and could not drive over 1500 miles a year. got them at a real cheap rate. the others were suspended then reinstated. had year round on my everyday cars.
just talk to your agent and see if they can do something similar.
